I remember those long, interesting drives when I worked in the oil field. Safety is taken seriously in oil and gas, but the question I am asking today is not really about safety.
It is about who you are.
This is not a question of intelligence. Most people understand that a car traveling fast enough could appear before you have time to react. Most people can also figure out that stopping is a good idea, even when the road appears empty.
That is simple math.
The deeper question is about professionalism. Do you do the right thing when no one is watching?
I often tell my clients that if you remain professional when you do not need to be, and you make that behavior a habit, you will always be professional when it matters most.
The stop sign represents the same principle. It is easy to do the right thing when someone is watching, when consequences are visible, or when recognition is possible. Character is revealed when none of those things are present.
Human beings are interesting. Behavioral science suggests that when people are given multiple paths toward an outcome, they will often choose the path of least resistance, even when that path creates greater personal risk or consequence.
Professionalism requires something different.
It requires discipline without supervision.
It requires standards without recognition.
It requires doing the right thing because that is simply who you are.
So, do you stop at the stop sign?
